I’m late to the party with this as far as posting up an opinion is concerned so I’m not going to write anything of considerable length here, but let me just say that I am firmly in the anti-SOPA camp. If passed the Stop Online Piracy Act is a terribly dangerous thing, a vicious attack on freedom of speech and information on the internet. It’s title is a complete red herring as it’s not really about piracy, the MegaUpload case has shown that they can already take down sites they believe to be (not proven to be, but believe to be) involved with piracy or illegal distribution/use of intellectual property. So as far as I can make out SOPA is being put into place as an excuse to take down any site, or individual, expressing opinions which may rock the boat, so to speak. This sounds vaguely like conspiracy theory territory but you have to be suspicious when non-media companies such as Chanel, Nike, Harley Davidson, and New Era come out in support of the act.
Other than making a big noise online there isn’t too much that we can do to combat SOPA but someone came up with the idea of ‘Black March’, details of which are on the .JPG below.
